Several years ago, I became interested in Lewis Carroll (Rev. Charles Dodgson). I had read about him possibly having migraines, and experiencing migraines myself, I went on a search to uncover the truth. Quickly I was caught up in the man (who quite likely did have migraines) but also shared my background in mathematics, my interest in religion, and in all things psychic. Who would have thought this rather stuffy (by all accounts), conservative Victorian deacon would have been a founding member of the Society for Psychical Research?

Of course, most of us are familiar with Lewis Carroll for his nonsense poems and the Alice books. I have to confess that I never read the books as a child and only as an adult have I been drawn to them.

Rob Bell, My Favorite Heretic

Rob-Bell0Rob Bell can be described in many ways–Christian pastor, bestselling author, Oprah favorite….  Heretic.

The latter label was bandied about when he published LOVE WINS and asserted that hell was only a metaphor Jesus was talking about and not an actual eternal destination. In the storm that followed, he left the church he had founded and went rogue from the Establishment.

This summer he and his children are touring the center of the US taking his message on the road. Saturday night my daughter and I caught him in St. Louis at the Pageant Theatre/club, a venue more often the site of boozy headliners than evangelists. But it was exactly the sort of place Jesus might have hung out in his day.

As a modest rogue Christian myself, who thoroughly enjoyed LOVE WINS, seeing Bell in person for a mere $25 sounded like an interesting evening out. It was a very low tech event–a large white board and only one colored marker provided the special effects. Mr. Bell strolled on stage in casual khaki clothes and didn’t even offer a showy costume change.

41m9eQeUAkLWhat he did offer was something we rarely see any more–ideas. He began his talk with the big bang theory  and moved into the evolution of the universe,  and the appearance of humankind. He presented a case for an ever expanding creation that must have some Divine Intelligence holding it all together.

He crossed into my territory when he explained everything as energy. Each person is one energetic being interacting with another energetic being.

Bell is a gifted, charismatic speaker who can be wise, humble, funny, self-deprecating and controversial.  He spoke out against racism in the heart of city where Michael Brown’s death touched off national awareness of deep-rooted social divides. For me, Bell represents a Christianity that is actually following the example of Jesus, rather than perpetuating outdated concepts from stagnated religious organizations.

He spoke for two hours and never lost his audience. He is more teacher than evangelist and ultimately the message is simple. God is Love. Love is the greatest power of the Universe.

It’s not a new message, but it’s sure one the world needs to understand  and embrace. So, from one heretic to another–thanks for an uplifting  evening, Mr. Bell. I enjoyed it immensely.

What It Really Means to Be An American

The American dream is beautiful when it wakes us from our sleep and reminds us that we are living, breathing participants in the greatest social experiment ever.

I have had an uneasy relationship with America for almost a decade. Before that I was as flag-waving as anyone else, and more than most.

That changed when I began to see a world without borders. I spent some years feeling that we would be a lot better off as a species if we could live together on this round planet without all the artificial lines of nationalism to divide us.

I was also gut-sick over what the ethos of America has become. We have strayed, it seems, from the rugged, creative, dynamic spirit which inspired people from around the world to land on these shores and start something from scratch. Instead, we have slouched our way into believing that being Americans means an entitlement to being the biggest (and I do mean biggest in every way–just look at the average waistline on this continent), most badass consumers on the planet. Somehow we have come to believe that we have a right to scarf down every resource in sight to fuel our lifestyle.

Merica_Yeah_largeCouple that with a long, honest look back at how we occupied the territory now known as America and it is hard to avoid feeling shame about the atrocities and genocides we committed along the way.

We haven’t stopped committing atrocities in the name of our most holy America, either. We are doing it in different places around the world right now. Some of our transgressions are sins of commission. Others are sins of omission. 

We wave the flag, drop bombs and cheer for ourselves. Our constant quest for more resources and more control creates imbalances and power vacuums that cause tremendous misery in real people’s lives around the world. We ignore them.

The most unconscious of us yell some equivalent of, “‘Merica…fuck yeah!” whenever we prove that we are God’s chosen people to reign over the earth. I get sick when people talk about how “…our boys are over there defending our freedom,” when what they are really doing is engaging in corporate warfare. I don’t question the heroism and loyalty of our soldiers, but I can’t handle the blind nationalism which keeps us believing that we are doing something honorable and prideworthy most of the time.

All of that being said, and as disheartening as it can be, I am convinced there is a lot more to the story.

In my search to find out if there was anything worth saving about America, I learned a lot about human nature and about the magnificent intentions of those who designed the foundation for this country.

First, the fact is that humans have not yet evolved past the need for boundaries and national identities. We just haven’t. We are headed that direction, but it is a horizon we have not yet reached. To pretend otherwise is to argue with reality.

Second, those who drafted the blueprint for America were imperfect from our two-hundred-years-later perspective. They owned slaves, approved slaughters and did otherwise horrible things from our current vantage point. That does not diminish the fact that they helped start the most ambitious experiment in human history. In their times, they were the most progressive thinkers around.

This land of ours is a laboratory. We are all involved in adding chemicals, turning up the heat under test tubes and otherwise messing around to see if a theory called Human Freedom can be viable.

The spirit of America is not a license to live like great alimentary canals with mouths full of teeth, mindlessly chewing up luxuries and gorging ourselves on shiny lifestyles at the expense of the world, then stomping on anyone who protests. That is a direct violation of what our founders meant to create when they signed their names, lives and sacred honor to a document which declares, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

From where I sit, holding an American passport is like carrying orders that read, “I am an American. I have a responsibility to use the mind-boggling freedom and riches in ways that will honor the creator potential in all humans. I have been given opportunities to live my life in peace and safety, with all the resources I need to craft a magnificent life. It is my job to prove myself worthy of this and to treat the rest of the world with humility, respect and honor as they also seek to gain the freedoms which come so easily to me. I have a sacred duty to live in joy and spread the possibility of this wealth for the benefit of everyone everywhere.”

How will the world and our own lives appear if we pursue happiness with responsibility and the full understanding of exactly how amazing all of this is?

I am flying out of the country early on July 4th this year, so I will miss the fireworks and flag waving and barbecues for the first time in my life. I suspect my little jaunt to older countries will give me a different perspective on this place we call home. In the meantime, I love America for the promise of her conception and what she can become as we all grow up together.

th-3 Last weekend I blew $2,000 on the Hay House Writing From Your Soul Conference on Maui. Happy Birthday to me. Tropical breezes, flamingos, waterfalls, stunning sunsets and Wayne Dyer. Worth every penny.

Hay House is a major publisher of spiritual and self-help books. When Louise L. Hay couldn’t find a publisher for the book she’d developed helping AIDS patients, she published  YOU CAN HEAL YOUR LIFE independently. Reid Tracy came on board as chief financial officer and brought a canny business sense to structure Louise’s passion and vision.  And the rest is history. Now every spiritual author holds Hay House as their dream publisher. Well, except me. More on that later.

This weekend brought 550 authors and wannabe authors to Maui to soak in the bliss of Hawaii and the wisdom of Tracy, Dyer, and other Hay House luminaries, including all-things-angelic, Doreen Virtue. She lead off on Friday evening, speaking for three hours about her career path. She’s not the top selling Hay House author by accident. The woman works hard. Writing, speaking, traveling. Non-stop for the last twenty-five years. Her degrees in counseling began with a more traditional path of self-help books. She fought the inward nudging to write about her angel messages until a terrifying carjacking incident rocked her world. Being true to herself became more important than potential ridicule. Virtue’s angel books are a global sensation. She is lovely in person. Friendly and generous.

11148396_10205550936626793_5963176679843527715_nSaturday and Sunday featured a cozy fireside chat with Reid Tracy and Wayne Dyer, minus the fireplace. No special effects, graphics, bells or whistles. Just experience and wisdom. Tracy shared the harsh realities of what it takes to be a Hay House author. Great books and a great following. Like love and marriage, you can’t have one without the other. Tracy’s points:

  • Build Your Platform–an author must be social media savvy in today’s publishing scene. Thousands of Facebook followers, a dynamite blog site, a huge email list. 
  • Define Your Message–what are you saying to the world. What makes you unique?
  • Marketing–authors sell the books, not the publishers. Have a plan and execute it.
  • Write a great word-of-mouth book–Last, but not least. Building the biggest platform in the world won’t do much good if the book is a bore. Of course, that’s the elusive mystery. What makes a great “must read” book? Nobody can define it, but we know it when we see. 

51mjCI+NGYLWhile Tracy was instructive, Wayne Dyer was inspirational. Spell-binding even. At age seventy-five, he has reached a guru status that is well-deserved. I’ve admired the few Dyer books I’ve read through the years. He brings esoteric thinking to the common man. In 2003 when I was drowning in despair taking care of my stroke-affected father, There’s a Spiritual Solution to Every Problem, pulled me out of the emotional flood waters.

Seeing Dyer in person feels like a once-in-a-lifetime experience. His rags-to-riches personal story is compelling. His brilliance is surprising, though it shouldn’t be. Quotes from Nietzsche, the Tao, Melville, Rumi, the Bible, Shakespeare and more comes trippingly off his tongue. He weaves a tale, meandering until you wonder if he forgot what he was talking about about, then he pulls it all together into a great life lesson. He is humble, grateful and giving. He is simply a Great Teacher. 

I went for the weekend because I could, living a short puddle jump away. I admire Hay House and what they bring to the world. I thought Wayne Dyer would be good. I hoped to network with some local writers. And of course, there was Maui itself. Paradise. I enjoyed it all.

As for my writing career, I don’t see myself getting The Call from Reid Tracy. I’d rather watch a beautiful sunset than attract another thousand followers on Facebook or jump in a pool with my grand kids than agonize over a book proposal. I want to meet new people and listen to their stories rather than pushing my agenda on them.

But, mostly, I want to write beautiful books that come from my creative heart. They may come fast; they may come slow. I’ll love them first and hope others love them later. That’s what Writing From The Soul means to me.
