Doreen Virtue Sees The Light

by Dana Taylor

Author, psychologist, “angelologist,” Doreen Virtue has been a Hay House superstar for a long time. According to publisher Reid Tracy, her fifty plus books and multiple oracle cards make her Hay House’s top seller. While I’ve admired her success and sincerity, frankly, I haven’t been one of her devoted followers. Her books haven’t “called” to me. Doreen’s New Agey angels and ascended masters,  didn’t quite match up with my Christ-centered belief system. So, it came as a surprise to me earlier this year when I felt led to listen to her on YouTube. Doreen offers weekly Angel Messages from her animal ranch sanctuary in Maui.

As it turned out, Ms. Virtue had a life-changing Christ encounter in January 2017. She didn’t so much turn from turn from “wicked ways,” as fine tune her evolving belief system. On February 25, 2017 she received Christian baptism. This is creating an intriguing metamorphosis in the Virtue “brand,” which is big bucks for Hay House. Her weekly Angel Messages have turned into Biblical Sunday school lessons, blending metaphysical insights inspired by her angel cards, with scriptural examples and quotations. Bible references to Christ are the foundation of her talking points.

Beyond that, she went to Reid Tracy and told him that anything published from her at Hay House after February 25th must reflect her Christian orientation. Her next book is a Christian devotional entitled Mornings With The Lord, due to be released October 17. It will interesting to see if she starts a trend at Hay House into metaphysical Christian publications.

Until now the Christian book market has been ruled by the conservative houses like Thomas Nelson, which leave people like me out in the cold. Bland novels (no-sex-please-we’re-Christian), patriarchal authors, and left-brained theology promoting a world view from the Council Nicaea of AD 325. Followers of Christ like me who have mystical experiences, embrace reincarnation, sexual equality, and reject the idea of hell and damnation have been living under a cloud of heresy. Yet, we feel we follow the risen Christ as much as any registered church member, maybe more.

We’re spiritually hungry. We pray and meditate. Our bookshelves are lined with New Age book classics that are at once inspiring, yet unsatisfying, because they rarely mention the greatest mystic of all, Jesus of Nazareth. We’ve gravitated to the Christ-channeled modern marvel, A Course in Miracles.

But, we want more. Books that reflect the living Christ, without a world view of duality and judgment. Perhaps Doreen Virtue will lead a vanguard into Christian books that break down the walls of old, patriarchal thinking. Books for heretics like me.

Watch this week’s Angel Message. Doreen details the changes coming to her career in segment two.

I Wish I Knew Then, What I Know Now

Book review by Dana Taylor

“Humanity is not a random accident. There is a reason we are here, and each one of us has a purpose in life that we have come to fulfill, a reason and a purpose which we planned prior to incarnating. We are much more than our physical body; we are eternal souls incarnated in a body.” Roser Sagarra

As I read Roser Sagarra’s book Living on Earth: A Guide to Help You Achieve Health, Happiness and Success, I pictured myself back around 1970. If only some time traveler had popped in and handed me this book, it would have saved me a whole lot of time and effort. The coming trends of the next decades would have been clear. The best books to read regarding spirituality, consciousness, the law of attraction, energy healing, alternative medicine, even pre-life planning and past life therapy are all laid out.

Sagarra compresses a lifetime of searching and exploration into a concise organization of the mind-body-spirit consciousness movement of the past several decades. She touches on spirituality, without being religious. Like many, she has embraced Eastern ideas of karma, reincarnation, and laws of creation and translates them for a Western culture.

Information on health and healing reflect the movement away from old thinking of the body as a machine into the awareness of the energetic nature of human beings. She gives a concise overview of the trends of alternative therapies and the influence of emotions and stress on health.

At the end of every chapter, Sagarra recommends books to expand comprehension of the topics discussed. Time and again, I realized I had gravitated to the same books through the years. Like Sagarra, those books and their ideas changed and enriched my life.

As the subtitle suggests, Living on Earth is a straightforward guide to leading a healthy, happy, and successful life in the 21st century.

Wayne Dyer Teaches Passion and Purpose

Book Review by Dana Taylor

In June of 2015 I uncharacteristically spent over $2,000 to attend a Hay House Writer’s Conference on Maui featuring Dr. Wayne Dyer. An inner urgency compelled me to pony up the money on what felt like a very frivolous expenditure. I fought the impulse for quite a while and finally gave into the internal nagging and bought the tickets. Would I meet someone special? Would there be a career-making encounter?

Wayne-Dyer1Upon reflection these months later, the weekend was a soul-inspiring event when “you had to be there.”  Wayne Dyer and Hay House President, Reid Tracy, sat in two comfy wingback chairs and casually chatted. Wayne was seventy-five years young. Truly, he seemed ageless. He was brilliant, funny, and wise, which you might expect from a man who’d been a celebrity for over 40 years. What I didn’t expect was his kindness and connection to people. Most of us build an invisible protective barrier around ourselves. It’s our natural state. We don’t look strangers in the eye. We fear intrusion into our personal space. Somewhere along the line, Wayne Dyer dropped his barrier. He embodied the meaning of “Namaste” ~ I bow to the Divine in you. He appeared to actually see the Divine spark in each individual. I wondered as I left the conference, How did he reach that level of awareness?

41+6gBMC3-L._SX340_BO1,204,203,200_It made a profound impression on me. As did his unexpected passing a few weeks later on August 29th. As it turned out, that conference was my last chance to be in the presence of Wayne Dyer in this lifetime. After his death, Hay House provided deep discounts on his books and I purchased both the ebook and audio version of his autobiography, I Can See Clearly Now, which was his last solo manuscript.

It sat in my library several months, but I recently finished listening to Dr. Wayne recall the events that molded his life. I’d heard some of the stories at the conference, so it was like being in his presence again to hear the recording. Wayne wasn’t born a spiritual guru, although he was always brilliant and different from the pack. But he had his issues. He harbored deep anger and resentment toward the absentee father he never knew. His ego-driven early years brought success, but also stress and alcohol dependency. Yet, he always worked at improving himself.

“I am a teacher” was his over-riding life theme. In the 1970’s he brought pop-psychology to the masses with the bestselling book of the decade, Your Erroneous Zones. In the course of his life, he lectured around the world, helping people find their highest selves. His forty-one books were all hand written on legal pads and most hit the New York Times bestseller lists. He raised over 200 million dollars for Public Television through nine specials that he personally promoted at stations all across the country.

Those are the big achievements, but the most compelling parts of I Can See Clearly Now are the “Divine appointments.” Time and again, Wayne relates “lucky breaks” and “chance meetings” that changed the course of his life. Even his worst setbacks turned into learning and growing experiences. Besides being a great teacher, Wayne was a great seeker of truth and wisdom. That compulsion led him from philosophers like Thoreau to psychologists like Karl Jung and ultimately to great spiritual mystics–Christ, St. Francis, Lao Tzu, and Rumi. Wayne walked up a ladder of  spiritual awakening his whole life.

Wayne received fame and fortune, but his focus was often on giving time and attention to others. At home, he fathered eight children, who obviously delighted him. After reading an article about a woman who been caring for a comatose daughter for twenty years, he sought her out and became a life-long friend. At one of his appearances he noticed a compelling African woman in the crowd and knew he needed to learn her story. Her name was Immaculee Ilibagiza, and she survived the massacres in Rwanda hiding in a bathroom with seven other women for 91 days. Wayne Dyer followed his internal guidance and encouraged her to tell her story to the world. He mentored and promoted her. He even gave her the title for her book, Left to Tell, which became a bestseller. A few years later, he read an amazing story of healing on a chat room website and contacted the young woman, Anita Moorjani, who had come back from near death with great spiritual insights. Once again, his intervention resulted in an inspiring story and message going from obscurity to global recognition. Moorjani wrote the bestseller Dying to Be Me and lectures around the world.  Dyer was a living example of generosity in his personal and private life.

Many of the milestones in I Can See Clearly Now are Wayne’s books. He clearly loved the writing process and his prolific legacy is certainly enviable to anyone who has spent time wrestling with book writing. I remember a moment at the conference when he confessed the thrill at receiving the first copies of each book. They were his creative “children.”

By the end of his life, Wayne Dyer had made peace with his greatest struggles. He walked in High Awareness, listening to Spirit and reaching out in compassion to everyone he encountered. I can see clearly now that attending that conference gave me a wonderful example of one person who figured out how to live a life of passion and purpose.

I don’t think Dr. Wayne died, but rather ascended. He lived out his dharma and moved on. After his ashes were cast into the ocean, his family snapped a picture of the sea. If you look carefully, you’ll see the last “impression” of Wayne Dyer. img_dyerFace

I Can See Clearly Now is an inspiring testament of a life well-lived.

In Paradise with Wayne Dyer

Danaheadshot by Dana Taylor

th-3 Last weekend I blew $2,000 on the Hay House Writing From Your Soul Conference on Maui. Happy Birthday to me. Tropical breezes, flamingos, waterfalls, stunning sunsets and Wayne Dyer. Worth every penny.

Hay House is a major publisher of spiritual and self-help books. When Louise L. Hay couldn’t find a publisher for the book she’d developed helping AIDS patients, she published  YOU CAN HEAL YOUR LIFE independently. Reid Tracy came on board as chief financial officer and brought a canny business sense to structure Louise’s passion and vision.  And the rest is history. Now every spiritual author holds Hay House as their dream publisher. Well, except me. More on that later.

Doreen Virtue

Doreen Virtue

This weekend brought 550 authors and wannabe authors to Maui to soak in the bliss of Hawaii and the wisdom of Tracy, Dyer, and other Hay House luminaries, including all-things-angelic, Doreen Virtue. She lead off on Friday evening, speaking for three hours about her career path. She’s not the top selling Hay House author by accident. The woman works hard. Writing, speaking, traveling. Non-stop for the last twenty-five years. Her degrees in counseling began with a more traditional path of self-help books. She fought the inward nudging to write about her angel messages until a terrifying carjacking incident rocked her world. Being true to herself became more important than potential ridicule. Virtue’s angel books are a global sensation. She is lovely in person. Friendly and generous.

11148396_10205550936626793_5963176679843527715_nSaturday and Sunday featured a cozy fireside chat with Reid Tracy and Wayne Dyer, minus the fireplace. No special effects, graphics, bells or whistles. Just experience and wisdom. Tracy shared the harsh realities of what it takes to be a Hay House author. Great books and a great following. Like love and marriage, you can’t have one without the other. Tracy’s points:

  • Build Your Platform–an author must be social media savvy in today’s publishing scene. Thousands of Facebook followers, a dynamite blog site, a huge email list.
  • Define Your Message–what are you saying to the world. What makes you unique?
  • Marketing–authors sell the books, not the publishers. Have a plan and execute it.
  • Write a great word-of-mouth book–Last, but not least. Building the biggest platform in the world won’t do much good if the book is a bore. Of course, that’s the elusive mystery. What makes a great “must read” book? Nobody can define it, but we know it when we see.

51mjCI+NGYLWhile Tracy was instructive, Wayne Dyer was inspirational. Spell-binding even. At age seventy-five, he has reached a guru status that is well-deserved. I’ve admired the few Dyer books I’ve read through the years. He brings esoteric thinking to the common man. In 2003 when I was drowning in despair taking care of my stroke-affected father, There’s a Spiritual Solution to Every Problem, pulled me out of the emotional flood waters.

Seeing Dyer in person feels like a once-in-a-lifetime experience. His rags-to-riches personal story is compelling. His brilliance is surprising, though it shouldn’t be. Quotes from Nietzsche, the Tao, Melville, Rumi, the Bible, Shakespeare and more comes trippingly off his tongue. He weaves a tale, meandering until you wonder if he forgot what he was talking about about, then he pulls it all together into a great life lesson. He is humble, grateful and giving. He is simply a Great Teacher.

I went for the weekend because I could, living a short puddle jump away. I admire Hay House and what they bring to the world. I thought Wayne Dyer would be good. I hoped to network with some local writers. And of course, there was Maui itself. Paradise. I enjoyed it all.

As for my writing career, I don’t see myself getting The Call from Reid Tracy. I’d rather watch a beautiful sunset than attract another thousand followers on Facebook or jump in a pool with my grand kids than agonize over a book proposal. I want to meet new people and listen to their stories rather than pushing my agenda on them.

But, mostly, I want to write beautiful books that come from my creative heart. They may come fast; they may come slow. I’ll love them first and hope others love them later. That’s what Writing From The Soul means to me.

Aloha!

Dana Taylor
