The Tao for Now

IMG_3406.2016-07-09_162535_kindlephoto-77292004 by Dana Taylor

th

Some 2,500 years ago a Chinese prophet and keeper of the Imperial archives in the capital city of Luoyang grew weary of the continual warring factions of his time. He decided to leave them all behind and journey into the desert. A gate keeper named Yin Hsi recognized the wise man, Lao-tzu, and implored him to write the essence of his knowledge for spiritual living before disappearing into the wilderness. The wise man left behind 81 verses known today as the Tao Te Ching.

During this summer of political turbulence, senseless violence, fear, hatred, lies, mob hysteria, and relentless war, I’ve sought peace in returning to the simplicity of the Tao Te Ching. Passed down through the centuries, translations abound. Two of my favorites are from Stephen Mitchell and another from Wayne Dyer entitled Living the Wisdom of the Tao. Both offer a mental retreat from the chaos of the daily news.

TaoWhat exactly is the Tao (pronounced Dao)? Modern terms might be God, Source, Creator, The Field, or for Star Wars fans–The Force. Verse 21 puts it this way:

The Tao is elusive and intangible.
Although formless and intangible, it gives rise to form.
Although vague and elusive, it gives rise to shapes.
Although dark and obscure, it is spirit, it is essence,
the life breath of all things.*

In this materialistic, competitive world, wise words from verse 67 puts things in perspective:

I have three treasures which I hold fast and watch closely.
The first is mercy.
The second is frugality.
The third is humility.*

Lao-Tzu had a great deal to say about government and leadership. Seeing his homeland being destroyed by discord and violence inspired many passages:

Verse 46
When a country is in harmony with the Tao,
the factories make trucks and tractors.
When a country goes counter to the Tao,
warheads are stockpiled outside the cities**

Verse 57
th-5If you want to be a great leader,
you must follow the Tao.
Stop trying to control.
Let go of fixed plans and concepts,
and the world will govern itself.

The more prohibitions you have,
the less virtuous people will be.
The more weapons you have,
the less secure people will be.
The more subsidies you have,
the less self-reliant people will be.**

Verse 60
Governing a large country is like frying a small fish.
You spoil it with too much poking.*

In an age where everyone appears to be an “activist”–marching, yelling, posting, and tweeting–the Tao Te Ching offers a perspective toward finding a healthy balance.

Verse 29
Do you think you can take over the universe and improve it?
I do not believe it can be done.

Everything under heaven is a sacred vessel and cannot be controlled.
Trying to control leads to ruin.
Trying to grasp, we lose.

Allow your life to unfold naturally.
Know that it too is a vessel of perfection.
Just as you breathe in and breathe out,
there is a time for being ahead
and a time for being behind;
a time for being in motion
and a time for being at rest;
a time for being vigorous
and a time for being exhausted;
a time for being safe
and a time for being in danger.

To the sage all of life is a movement toward perfection,
so what need has he
for the excessive, the extravagant, or the extreme?*

These ancient words of wisdom illustrate there truly is “nothing new under the sun,” to quote another wise man, Solomon in Ecclesiastes. Arrogant leaders, down-trodden masses, and violence is nothing new. Yet, there is a path to inner peace despite the outward turmoil. Turning off media devices and delving into ancient wisdom is a good start. To quote the most famous Tao Te Ching passage:

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

If you’re seeking mental clarity and calm during this calamitous season, pick up a copy of the Tao Te Ching and take a long walk in nature. I’ll see you there!

Bright blessings,

Dana Taylor

Visionary Tale of Nazis, Templars, and the Holy Grail

Visionary Fiction is a rising genre of our times. This new novel from Victor E. Smith blends two harsh, but fascinating, time periods with the ever-intriguing search for the Holy Grail.

Even death cannot stop two hearts that beat as one.

51g2n1H0McLIn May 1939, German newspapers announced the untimely death of 35-year-old author Otto Rahn, applauding him as “comrade, decent SS-man and creator of outstanding historical-scholarly works.” But his Swiss lover Raymond knew that Otto had neither died accidentally nor as a member of the infamous SS.

Before the Nazis, Rahn had researched the medieval French Cathars, a heretical sect exterminated by war and the Inquisition, and he published his account of this tragedy as Crusade against the Grail. His book fascinated Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler, an occult fanatic, who then enticed Otto into the SS as a historical researcher. Gambling that Otto’s psychic talents might lead to the recovery of the coveted Holy Grail for the Nazis, Himmler coddled the writer, even condoning his illegal homosexuality. Then Rahn came to discover that the SS and its operations were far from benign.

After Otto’s demise, Raymond knew that his partner’s work deserved recognition, but as a genuine Grail bearer and not as a member of the SS. To do this, Raymond had to recover his own unique gift: a phenomenal memory that took him back to the Cathar era where the men’s mutual mission, which could only be carried out with them riding two to a horse in the way of the Knights Templar, was first entrusted to them.

Channel of the Grail is a visionary novel, historically based on the medieval Cathar persecutions and the 20th century life and times of Otto Rahn.

Victor E. Smith

Victor E. Smith

About the Author

Victor E. Smith became a generalist, as opposed to a specialist, seemingly by fate. From childhood on a Pennsylvania communal farm, to adolescence in a Catholic seminary, then into adulthood with occupations that ranged from counselor and teacher to printing entrepreneur and corporate computer trainer, all while parenting three children, Vic remains astounded, often stunned, by the variety, both wonderful and terrible, inherent in human life. Such awe has always compelled him to write. From his first “book” of poems as a teenager; through experimental plays, poetry, and short stories in his twenties; with volumes of educational and technical writing throughout his work career, he finally settled on the novel as his writing mode of choice.

A lifelong proponent of the human urge for spiritual evolution, he has focused on phenomena “just over the edge”: reincarnation, the paranormal, parapsychology, and alternative history, especially in the spiritual/religious sphere. Gnostic (based on direct perception rather than authority) in his approach, he aims to live an idea first and then write from personal experience. A tall order for someone supposedly writing fiction. Traveling to the places he writes about, developing relationships with those intimate with his subject, and “grokking the fullness” of his material through reflection and extensive personal journalling are to his research what clues are to a detective. THE ANATHEMAS, a Novel of Reincarnation and Restitution, ripened over decades, was his first novel. His second, THE PERFECT, about the medieval Cathars of southern France and Nazi interest in their obscure religion, is scheduled for publication in 2013.

Ever-Flowing Streams: Christ, Reiki, Reincarnation and Me

Book One ~ Supernal Living Series

What others are saying about Ever-Flowing Streams~

F“Dana Taylor has written an engrossing and powerful memoir that touched my soul. I literally could not put this book down until I had finished the last page. I read with an open heart and an open mind, and I came away with a new and amazing awareness of my own inherent ability to heal myself and to offer healing thoughts to others. Dana’s story and her suggested healing exercises have strengthened my Christian faith, and I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone who is curious about the healing power of prayer.” Donna Fasano, USA Today Bestselling Author

“The honesty displayed in Dana Taylor’s memoir, Ever Flowing Streams, is immediately evident. From her painful battle with panic attacks, choking sensations, and chronic inflammation, she leads the reader patiently, but determinedly through her struggles for answers. Sleepless nights, more often than not, lead to too much alcohol to deaden the pain and allay the fears. The author lays out life struggles for the ultimate good of any reader open to the possibility of a spiritual solution.

Her Christian upbringing and beliefs blend, not always easily, with other forms of spiritualism. At times, she fights to open her mind to the belief that Reiki, for instance–often viewed by Christians as evil–might help her discover the awareness to heal her ravaged body and spirit, and possibly to help others.” Mary Cunningham, author Cynthia’s Attic Series

Powerful stories and raw emotion are masked beneath her subtle humor and down home personality. While the book is not a tutorial or a lesson, it is a guidepost to consider something more.” Karen Syed, Echelon Press

This is a book not to be missed. I highly recommend anyone interested in energy medicine, healing or miracles read this powerfully moving and illuminating book.” Lois Wetzel, author of Reincarnation: Past Lives and the Akashic Records

Celebrating the release of Supernal Adventures: Exploring the New Normal of Multidimensional Living, Book Two ~ Supernal Living Series

Supernal Adventure

Explore the New Normal of Multidimensional Living

Supernal Adventures

Supernal AdventureIn 2005 my friend, Paula, experienced a “miracle” healing of an “incurable” disease, RSD (Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome), through a Reiki therapist. RSD is an excruciating condition. It generally begins after an injury. The nervous system keeps sending the pain signals. First noted in the Civil War, surgeons performed amputations in an attempt to halt the pain. The result was “ghost pain.” Though the limbs were gone, the soldiers still felt the throbbing, unrelenting agony.

A fall on a stairway began a seven year descent into misery and disability for Paula. She was ultimately on 29 medications and had two battery devices installed into her back with lead wires attached to her spine to offer pain control. Her entire right side was involved. She often used a cane and occasionally a wheelchair. She became part of a control group of an RSD specialist at UCLA. In the summer of 2005 the doctor told her they were out of options and to prepare herself for a life confined to a wheelchair and ultimately a bed. She was 50 years old.

Given that grim future outlook, she and her sister, Sue, took my suggestion to visit me and schedule appointments with the wonderful Reiki therapist, Helen, I had recently met. At the very least, it would be a fun vacation for them.

Much to our amazement, after three Reiki sessions, Paula no longer suffered from RSD. Her healing opened up a whole new world for us. Paula, Sue, and I began exploring energy healing, quantum physics, alternative medicine, and meditation. Our weekly meditation sessions took on a mystical life of their own. We began calling ourselves the Supernal Friends.

Being a writer and observer, I took notes of what happened in our sessions. Over the course of time, I filled pages and pages of what I called the Supernal Journals. Now, a decade later, I’ve used those journals as the basis for my new book, Supernal Adventures: Exploring the New Normal of Multidimensional Living.

Join the Supernal Friends on their many adventures. You may discover the new normal of multidimensional living for yourself!
